Into Aqua - Ross Briggs - Aquaculture consultant

Ross Briggs

Ross completed a B.Sc. (Hons) at the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University, while studying tilapia in Thailand. Post-graduation he worked at Landcatch in Scotland for 12 months. He then moved to sunny Australia worked at Tassals Russell Falls Hatchery 5 years.

After some more travel and working through Europe, Ross spent some time at Vitafish – Europe’s first large Land based system at the time, for 3000T of Tilapia.

Ross then went to Huon Aquaculture of almost 9 years, as an Assistant Hatchery Manager eventually working in Production Planning and Project Management for the Marine and Freshwater areas including planning some of their RAS facilities currently operating.

After 1 year working at a new start-up Bio-tech firm in Sydney called BioGill as the Divisional Manager for Aquaculture, working a variety of domestica and international projects. He then spent 5 years as Business Development Manager and then Senior Project Manager for Fresh By Design, being pivotal in helping the company successfully complete, (from concept to completion) and wide range and size of successful projects.

He has 2 children, Rosie and Alfie, and loves football and still plays most weekends – while watching Liverpool most weekends. When he’s not doing that he’l be riding a mountain bike (trying not to break himself) and recently completed most of the Tasmanian Trail, or 350km of it, as part of a backpacking expedition. He’s also recently taken up surfing.

Into Aqua - Stephen Ley - Aquaculture consultant

Stephen Ley

Having completed a Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture at the University of Tasmania, Stephen quickly moved into the commercial sector and has been living his passion for the industry ever since.

Over the course of a twenty year plus career in the aquaculture industry, Stephen has been involved in many aspects of the industry and has gained working experience with species of both tropical and temperate environments from Hobart to the Torres Strait in Far North Queensland.

Stephen has had valuable experience across a broad range of operations including shellfish hatcheries and algae culture, finfish and shellfish nurseries commercial grow-out, seafood processors and institutional R&D – including Atlantic salmon, barramundi, prawns, pearl oysters, abalone and rock lobsters.

Over this time, Stephen has worked on areas of ozone and oxygen control as well as consultancy and servicing and after a brief spell working with Fresh By Design, returned to working in the University Sector and running his own small business servicing clients in Tasmania.

His current main areas of interest area include

  • Automation, PLC system
  • Aquaculture System variable control (oxygen, ozone)
  • Improving, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of RAS

Into Aqua - Guy Westbrook - Aquaculture consultant

Guy Westbrook

Guy has been involved in commercial aquaculture since 1988, developing a broad knowledge of operations and management of salmonid hatchery operations, marine sea cage farming of Atlantic Salmon, Ocean Trout, Barramundi, Southern Bluefin Tuna and Yellowtail Kingfish. His main area of expertise lies with marine farming, including roles as Farm Manager for Seafarms and Aquatas Ltd, Group Operations Manager for Nortas Pty Ltd, Special Projects Manager at Tassal Operations, General Manager for Marine Farming for Marine Produce Australia, and Operations Manager for Tuna Farming with Sarin Group Fishing.

Most recently Guy has worked as Project Co-ordinator for Wellboat Efficiency and Improvement, a contract role with Huon Aquaculture Company which included being part of the project team to develop the world’s largest and most efficient wellboat, Ronja Storm.

He has a breadth of knowledge in marine farming systems and operations, and can provide advice on farming systems and equipment, production planning, and strategies to ensure profitability.
