What Is Aeration?

Aeration is a process of introducing oxygen to water through the application of air or currents of water. Aquaculture aeration supplies fish, shrimp, and other aquatic animals with sufficient dissolved oxygen to survive, as well as overall water quality.

How They Operate

Aeration systems work by introducing air into water or agitating the surface to achieve oxygen transfer. The most common forms of aerators are:

  • Paddlewheel Aerators: Mechanically agitate water to allow for increased oxygen uptake.
  • Diffused Aeration Systems: Use the application of air compressors and diffusers to emit minute bubbles, improving oxygen transfer.
  • Surface Aerators: Mix the water surface to allow for gas exchange.
  • Venturi Aerators: Employ water pressure to suck in air and mix it with the water.
