What Is Mechanical Filters?

Mechanical filters are devices for filtering solid debris and waste out of aquaculture water systems. They are critical in the maintenance of water clarity and purity.

How They Operate

Physical barriers like screens, drum filters, or beds of media filter suspended particles and are used in mechanical filters. Water flows through the filter medium, leaving the waste material behind and allowing the clean water to continue through the system.

What are the benefits of using mechanical filters?
Using mechanical filters in your aquaculture system can help with:
  • Improved Water Quality: Removes solid waste, creating a healthier environment for aquatic organisms.
  • Less Maintenance: Minimises the need for frequent water changes.
  • Healthier Stock: Promotes healthier fish by reducing contact with poisonous waste.
Additional Set Up
For high-volume aquaculture operations, mechanical filters can be complemented by auto backwash filters. While mechanical filters effectively remove solid waste, auto backwash filters provide continuous and automated filtration, reducing maintenance efforts and ensuring uninterrupted water quality management. For operations requiring advanced solid waste removal, mechanical filters can be complemented by drumfilter technology. Drumfilters provide automated, high-capacity filtration, making them ideal for larger or more intensive aquaculture setups.

After initial solid removal, bag and cartridge filters can be used as a polishing step to capture finer particles, ensuring crystal-clear water throughout your system.
